Ouachita Parish Public Library Hosts “SummerFest 2016” to
Launch Summer Reading Challenge
Monroe, La.-
The Ouachita Parish Public Library host its free event “SummerFest” on Saturday, May 21, 2016 as its kick off to “Summer Reading Challenges” for all age groups. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Main Branch, and will utilize the library’s property at the corner of North 19th and Hudson Lane in Monroe.
This year, activities will reflect the summer reading “sports” themes, including relay races, miniature golf, skeet ball, football toss, bean bag toss, and “fishing” games. Special live demonstrations will be performed Tiger Rock Martial Arts, wall climbing demonstrations by the National Guard, Zumba by Planet Fitness, and a return appearance by Cosmo, the Universal Spray Paint Artist. The Friends of the Ouachita Public Library will co-sponsor the event.
“We are putting a new twist on SummerFest this year, with sports-related games to go along with our sports-themed summer reading challenges,” said Robin Toms, Library Director. “Just like last year, there will be challenges for all ages, and all those who complete the challenges will receive special honors.“ Challenges will include reading, participating in library events, and in community activities.
There will be no admission fee for SummerFest, and games and activities will be free. The Main Stage will be the site for the unveiling of the River Reads adult summer reading selection. All the activites are free and refreshments will be provided, including “Lil Moe” Snow Cones from Eskimoes. Seating may be limited, so those who attend are invited to bring their own lawn chairs.
Summerfest returned as the kickoff for the Summer Reading Challenge last year.
